FLL and the Pee Posh Wetlands

First Lego League is better known as FLL. It’s a robotics program that Sacaton Middle School has been involved in for the last two years. Lego and Arizona State University have been sponsoring this program for a number of years. Our team activities will be guided by the First Lego League Core Values. These values are the cornerstone of the First Lego League program. The students will learn that helping one another is the foundation of teamwork. Here is the listing of the FLL Core Values:

  •      We are a team.
  •      We do the work to find solutions with guidance from our coaches and mentors.
  •      We know our coaches and mentors don’t have all the answers; we learn together.
  •      We honor the spirit of friendly competition
  •      What we discover is more important than what we win.
  •      We share our experiences with others.
  •      We display gracious professionalism and cooperation in everything we do.
  •      We have fun!

Every year FLL presents a challenge that participating students must solve as a team. This year’s challenge is entitled “Hydrodynamics”. The challenge will have our students thinking of ways to improve how people find, transport, use, or dispose of water. Our students need to share their problem and solution with others. Sacaton’s FLL Team conducted research and study of different water issues and problems that face the Gila River Indian Community. They invited the Department of Public Works and the Department of Environmental Quality to come and speak to them about water issues. The students were invited by the Althea Walker an environmental education and outreach specialist to take a field trip out to the Pee Posh Wetlands. The students learned that the Pee Posh Wetlands are a great example of a riparian habitat. They also learned how fragile these riparian habitats can be. The wetlands are very susceptible to pollution and its impact on the habitat.  The FLL team after the field trip to the Pee Posh Wetlands decided that their project should be on how they can educate the community on how important the wetlands are. On December 2nd, Sacaton’s FLL Team will be competing in a regional FLL competition at Phoenix Union BioScience High School. Our students will have the opportunity to tell the judges and the FLL community something about the Gila River Indian Community and why the Pee Posh Wetlands are so very special.
