COVID-19 District Updates and Information

July 23, 2020

Sacaton Braves,
Today, Governor Ducey and Superintendent Hoffman participated in a joint briefing on COVID-19 and released a new executive order that directs the Arizona Department of Health Services to develop public health metrics to indicate when it is safe to reopen schools for in-person instruction (see attached). Governing boards retain ultimate authority on when to open. There is no longer a date on which schools are required to begin in-person instruction. Schools are required to begin offering distance learning on their first regularly scheduled day of instruction and offer the "on-site learning opportunities" mandated by Executive Order 2020-41 beginning August 17th. However, new flexibilities are added for social distancing and other mitigation. These "on-site learning opportunities" need not be teacher-led instruction, and don't have to be offered at every school site.  ASBA has prepared a summary of today’s executive order (see attached).

A Special Meeting of the Governing Board is scheduled for Monday, July 27th   at 5:30 pm to recommend Sacaton Elementary School District continue online learning beginning August 10 and delay the return of in-person learning until October 19, 2020. This date coincides with the conclusion of the first quarter and fall break in accordance with the 2020-2021 Instructional Calendar. A Distance Learning Plan will be submitted to the Arizona Department of Education to meet the requirements for distance learning. The rationale for the recommendation is to keep our students, staff, and community safe from harm due to the uncertainty with the COVID-19 pandemic and the continued increase in coronavirus cases.

I miss you all terribly.

Stay Healthy,

Dr. Cherryl Paul
