We had our Middle School O'otham Himthag Thash (OHT) Thursday and Friday, May 8th and May 9th. Marcella Hoover did an excellent job of putting on the event for students, teachers, community members, Board members, and Council members. Our student's engagement level and respect level significantly increases when we are doing cultural activities. The students sat in the gym from 9am to 12pm on Friday and there were absolutely no behavior problems. The students recorded the dancers on their cell phones and came out of the stands to participate in round dances. The more we can immerse the culture into the curriculum, the more engaged and respectful the students are.
We finished the NWEA testing. NWEA measures growth. For example, for a 6th grader, the state test measured the student against one standard - "Is the student at the 6th grade level?" With the NWEA, a student could have been at a 3rd grade reading level last year and moved up to a 5th grade reading level this year, and that two year's of growth is acknowledged. About 40-60% of our students, in grades 5-8, met their growth goal on the NWEA. In 8th grade reading almost 70% of students met their growth goal. In 7th and 8th grade math, 60% of students met their growth goal.
It's a great day to be a Brave!
