Four Day Calendar Announcement

The Sacaton Elementary School District Governing Board has officially adopted a four-day school calendar for the 2026–2027 school year following an extensive review and community engagement process.

Over the past several months, the District evaluated multiple calendar options and gathered input through a districtwide survey that included parents, teachers, students, and community members. Results from the survey showed majority support for transitioning to a four-day school week.

In addition to survey feedback, the District hosted community meetings and public hearings to better understand perspectives, address concerns, and discuss potential impacts. After carefully considering all input, the Governing Board held a Special Session to finalize the academic calendar—ultimately selecting the four-day model.

Why a Four-Day Week?

The decision was guided by several key factors:

  • Community preference:

    Strong support across stakeholder groups

  • Student and staff well-being:

    Opportunity for improved work-life balance

  • Teacher recruitment and retention:

A growing number of districts nationwide report increased interest from educators

  • Operational efficiency:

Potential cost savings in transportation, utilities, and substitute staffing

What Other Districts Are Doing

Across Arizona and the United States, many rural and small districts have adopted four-day school weeks. Research and district reports suggest:

  • Improved

    attendance rates

    for both students and staff

  • Increased

    teacher satisfaction and retention

  • Neutral to modest impacts on

    academic performance

    , depending on implementation

Considerations and Ongoing Evaluation

The District recognizes that this shift brings important considerations, including:

  • Childcare needs

    on the non-school day

  • Longer instructional days

    Monday–Thursday

  • Ensuring continued

    academic rigor and student support

Sacaton Elementary School District is committed to monitoring outcomes closely and will continue to gather feedback to ensure the new schedule supports student success.

More details about the finalized calendar, including start/end times and support resources, will be shared in the days to come.

We appreciate the community’s engagement and partnership throughout this process.
