Sacaton Elementary School District #18 believes that students “Must Be Present to Win.” This goes beyond simply attending school—it means being mentally engaged, actively listening, learning, and building meaningful relationships with peers and staff. True learning requires presence.
One of the greatest barriers to student presence today is the use of personal cell phone devices. Research across schools nationwide has consistently shown that frequent phone use during the school day contributes to distraction, reduced attention spans, increased anxiety, and decreased academic performance. Cell phones can interrupt instruction, limit social interaction, and reduce students’ ability to fully engage in learning.
To support student success, the Sacaton Elementary School Board is taking steps to restrict student possession of cell phones during the academic day in the 2026-2027 school year. Under this practice:
Students will
check in their cell phones before entering academic areas
.
Devices will be
securely stored during the school day
.
Students will
retrieve their phones at the end of the day
to take home.
This approach is not about limiting access—it is about maximizing opportunity for learning and connection.

medical condition

Parents can
contact students during the school day
when needed
Students can

A Growing Movement Across Arizona

At Sacaton Elementary School District #18, we are committed to creating environments where students can fully engage, connect, and succeed.
Because at the end of the day — you must be present to win.
